Squad backs playing
The Republic of Ireland will fulfil their Nations League fixtures against Israel after a substantial majority of the squad voted to proceed during discussions in Debrecen, Hungary, on Saturday. FAI chief executive David Courell confirmed that a player had told head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson they were uncomfortable taking part and intended to withdraw from the squad. That development prompted further talks before the association confirmed its decision to continue. The meeting lasted four hours and led to the postponement of a scheduled morning news conference and training session. Both were held later in the afternoon.
Withdrawal request prompts further talks
The squad had already discussed the fixtures during a two-hour meeting in Pristina, where the group agreed to travel to Hungary. Saturday’s withdrawal request reopened the discussion, with players leading much of the debate and coaching staff and executives joining at various points. Courell said differing views were respected throughout the process. The FAI ultimately based its decision to proceed on the outcome of the squad vote. Midfielder Jason Knight had previously voiced opposition to the matches after Ireland’s 1-0 defeat in Kosovo on Thursday, describing the situation facing the players as difficult.
Boycott pressure continues
Ireland are scheduled to face Israel on Sunday, with their designated home fixture taking place in Backa Topola, Serbia, on Oct. 4. The decision comes amid sustained calls for a boycott in Ireland, where support for Palestinians is strong. More than 160 Irish sportspeople signed an open letter asking the FAI to reconsider, while protesters gathered outside the team’s Dublin hotel last week. The association has argued that refusing to play could bring severe UEFA sanctions. Former Ireland coach Brian Kerr has criticised its position, pointing to the FAI’s earlier request for Israel’s exclusion from the competition.
