Lozano gets a fresh opportunity
Rafael Márquez is counting on Hirving Lozano to strengthen Mexico’s attack as he prepares for his debut as national team coach against Colombia on Saturday. Lozano has been absent from Mexico duty since the friendly against Uruguay in November 2025 and missed this summer’s World Cup squad. Márquez nevertheless believes the LA Galaxy attacker retains the ability to influence matches and give the team another valuable option. The recall follows a difficult spell at San Diego FC, where off-field tensions led to his exclusion from the first team. The 31-year-old moved to the Galaxy on an initial loan last month, recording one goal and one assist across his first eight appearances.
Continuity shapes the opening camp
Márquez takes charge after working as Javier Aguirre’s assistant before the World Cup, where Mexico’s run ended with a 3-2 defeat to England in the round of 16. With limited preparation time, the new coach intends to retain much of the tournament squad’s approach while gradually adjusting aspects of Mexico’s attacking and defensive play. Experienced World Cup players remain central to his roster, alongside emerging Chivas talents Hugo Camberos and Santiago Sandoval. Mexico will be without Raúl Jiménez and Julián Quiñones as they recover from injuries, leaving Márquez short of prominent attacking options.
Colombia opens the schedule
Colombia, also eliminated in the World Cup’s round of 16, presents an immediate test. Márquez acknowledged Mexico’s recent difficulties in the matchup and expects a demanding opener. Mexico then faces Peru on Tuesday, followed by the United States on Oct. 3 and Chile on Oct. 6. Aguirre, whose Mexico contract expired after the World Cup, has since taken over at Valencia.
