Chairman reaffirms confidence

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has reiterated the club’s determination to prove its innocence in the ongoing financial case brought by the Premier League. In a message to supporters published on Saturday, Al Mubarak said City’s position and confidence had not shifted. He stressed that the proceedings still had a considerable way to go and that confidentiality restrictions prevented him from explaining the reasons behind the club’s stance. Al Mubarak also said his message had undergone legal checks before publication. He urged supporters to consider both City’s Friday statement and its response from February 2023 as continuing expressions of the club’s position.

Outcome and potential penalties remain unresolved

City are expected to be found guilty of the vast majority of the alleged financial breaches. The club’s Friday response did not deny guilty verdicts, instead maintaining that the process was continuing. Potential punishments range from a fine to a points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League. City are expected to appeal any guilty verdict. The league has declined to comment on the confidential proceedings.

The background to the case

The Premier League announced the charges in February 2023 after a four-year investigation. The alleged breaches cover the period between 2009 and 2018 and centre on whether City supplied financial information that accurately reflected the club’s position. An independent hearing at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in London began in September 2024 and concluded in December 2024 after 12 weeks. Alongside his defence of the club, Al Mubarak encouraged supporters to look ahead to the trip to Anfield and the Champions League home match against Paris St Germain following the international break.
