One Rivalry Game Could Change the NFC East Race
Monday Night Football brings together two NFC East rivals already running short on margin for error. Dallas and Philadelphia both enter at 2-4, with the Cowboys having lost two straight and the Eagles four in a row, meaning tonight’s loser falls to 2-5 and faces a much steeper path back into the division race. The matchup carries even more uncertainty because Philadelphia will start Tanner McKee in place of Jalen Hurts, removing Hurts’ rushing threat, red-zone production and ability to extend broken plays from an offense already averaging only 17.7 points per game. Dallas has struggled defensively, but it enters with the clear advantage in quarterback continuity, making Dak Prescott against an injury-hit Eagles offense the defining contrast of the night.
Saquon Barkley Could Be Philadelphia’s Best Path to an Upset
If Philadelphia is going to make McKee’s job manageable, Saquon Barkley may need to become the center of the offense. Barkley is officially questionable with a hamstring injury, but his progression from two limited practices to a full session Saturday is encouraging. His potential return also comes against the right opponent: Dallas entered Week 7 allowing almost 150 rushing yards per game, one of the weakest marks in the league, while Philadelphia’s rushing production collapsed during Barkley’s absence. The matchup is therefore attractive for Barkley rushing attempts, rushing yards and combined rushing + receiving production, although his final workload should not be assumed until he is officially active. If he can handle significant volume, Philadelphia has a realistic way to control possession, protect McKee and keep Dak Prescott off the field.
Dak Prescott Has the Clear Offensive Advantage
Dallas has been far more productive through the air, averaging more than 260 passing yards per game with Prescott already above 1,600 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Philadelphia, meanwhile, has allowed roughly 245 passing yards per game, and Dallas has not shown enough consistency on the ground to suggest it should suddenly abandon its passing identity. That puts Prescott passing yards, completions and passing touchdowns among the strongest markets to follow, with CeeDee Lamb receptions and receiving yards naturally connected to the same matchup. Dallas still needs to avoid the turnovers that can keep an undermanned opponent alive, but if Prescott plays a clean game, the Cowboys should have more ways to create offense than Philadelphia does with McKee.
DeVonta Smith’s Absence Makes Dallas Goedert Even More Important
Philadelphia’s quarterback change is not its only offensive problem. DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks are OUT, leaving McKee with fewer established options on the perimeter, while Dallas Goedert finished the week as a full participant and carries no final game designation. That could push the Eagles toward shorter, safer throws and make Goedert a natural security blanket on third down and in the middle of the field. Rather than chasing receiving yards from Philadelphia’s secondary wideouts, Goedert receptions may offer a cleaner connection to how the offense is likely to function with McKee. If Philadelphia falls behind, McKee’s attempts and completions could also rise quickly, even if his overall efficiency remains modest.
The Betting Angles That Matter Most Tonight
The most important Philadelphia market remains Barkley’s rushing workload, assuming he is active, because Dallas’ weak run defense gives the Eagles their clearest way to protect McKee. On the Dallas side, Prescott passing production and Lamb receptions fit an offense that already relies heavily on the quarterback. Goedert receptions are especially interesting with Smith unavailable, while McKee completions or attempts may be safer ways to evaluate his role than blindly taking an over on passing yards. Dallas first-half markets also deserve attention because Philadelphia may need time to settle into a different offensive structure without Hurts, although the Cowboys’ own defensive struggles make an Eagles team-total under far from automatic.
Can Philadelphia Stop the Slide?
The Eagles still have enough talent to make this a competitive divisional game, particularly if Barkley returns and can attack Dallas on the ground, but their margin for error has become extremely small. Philadelphia is asking a backup quarterback to stabilize an offense missing Hurts and Smith while trying to end a four-game losing streak. Dallas arrives with problems of its own, but Prescott gives the Cowboys the more proven path to sustained offense. If Barkley controls the game and McKee avoids mistakes, Philadelphia can keep the rivalry close; if Dallas forces the Eagles into a pass-heavy script, the quarterback advantage could become difficult to overcome.
